Achham was a part of Doti Kingdom during medieval era.[3] Nepal annexed Doti in 1790 . It remained part of Doti District until 1961. On 13 April 1961, Achham district carved out from Doti District and declared a separate district.
Achham is one of the remotest districts of Nepal. It is accessible by automobile from Kathmandu and Nepalgunj via a paved road that runs along the western border of Nepal from Dhangadhi. The unpaved road of Mid-Hill Highway through Dailakh district also traverses to Mangalsen by crossing Karnali at Rakam
The number of domestic tourists is increasing at Ramaroshan area of Achham district, which is renowned for 12 ponds and 18 pastures. This area lies in the highlands of the district and is one of the 100 destinations selected by the government for tourism promotion. The area boasts of different varieties of Rhododendron, the national flower of Newpal, as well as the national bird Lophophorus locally known as Danphe. This place, which is home to different kinds of medicinal herbs, is also home to some endangered animals.
Jigale lake is the largest lake in this area which has the shape of English letter C whereas Taune lake is the smallest one. Among the 18 patans, Kinemine patan is the largest patan, possibly the largest patan in the Achham District through which the Kailash river flows. This place is surrounded by a forest. Terraced hill slopes with lush green landscape surrounding the enchanting Ramaroshan Lake attracts everyone. On the route to this destination, travellers come across the forest of Rhododendron.
